I have been using xrandr as indicated here: to change the vertical resolution but it just moves the screen upwards leaving a black bar underneath my menu bar making the situation worse.

As I have installed the Ubuntu dual boot for a friend who normally uses Windows 7 I have chosen Cinnamon as a good transitional desktop for her to use but for some reason the top of the screen has been cut of by half an inch, thus the menu selection loses its first entry. With Ubuntu-Studio 14.04 installed the resolution works perfectly (using the xfce desktop) but Supertuxkart in fullscreen doesn't stretch to fill the screen leaving large black areas on both sides, other games have difficulties with fullscreen too maybe because this laptop has such a wide screen. This game’s playable characters all seem to come from the open source community. The game is perfectly playable even on my model of Chromebook and certainly gets me feeling a bit nostalgic for classic Mario Kart games. So many games do not as they seem to assume you’ll close it as most of us do on our smartphones. I personally like how this game has an exit button in its menu. Even so, they are simple while remaining sharp.

I would say you should feel free to try it out for yourself and see what you think for yoursef. It would benefit from a touchscreen during gameplay but isn’t a necessity to enjoy the game. Perfectly playable despite the one crash I had. Everything loaded back up just fine upon relaunch. Ended up having to close and relaunch it but this was done without issue. I did manage to get the game to freeze up on me one time. This is a touchpad or touchscreen-only game. You deliberately run your character into various things to do damage.
The game is rather interesting as the entire point is to pretty much destroy things around town and you can do this by simply holding a click and dragging on the touchpad to where you want to go.
Gameplay seems a bit jittery at times on my model but it overall just works. This is clear by the included image above.
The game installed successfully, loaded up, and launched seemingly without issue.
